Lessons

Most of the main lessons in this section were designed for science and geography teachers at the Middle and High school levels. They are designed to be completed in chronological order, however to save time the satellite image products required, NDVI and DNDVI images, in this unit have been posted for download from the data section of this Web page. Each of the lessons can be downloaded in various formats from this page.

Introduction (.PDF)

This interdisciplinary unit uses cross-curricular problem-solving techniques and remote sensing data to solve a proposed problem (urban sprawl) for our area. Note: The contents here are the same as in our Introduction section


Create NDVI: Studying Vegetation from Space (.PDF)

To create the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images necessary to complete the vegetation change detection lesson.


Lesson: Aerial Photography Interpretation (.PDF)

To develop an understanding of how to use an aerial photograph, to determine land cover type and to create a selective identification key to aid in interpretation.


Lesson: Create ΔNDVI or Vegetation Loss/Growth Calculation (.PDF)

To create the ΔNDVI images necessary to complete the vegetation change detection unit.


Lesson: Vegatative Change (.PDF)

To identify land cover change using the ΔNDVI images
